During adventures, people are bound to be encountered by a random event of some kind. Encounters are Random Events that occur while journeying through the world, usually minor in scale, encounters typically come with risks and possible chances of gaining more items, as well as allowing more world building to occur.
Planning Good Encounters
Encounters that are good tend to stick more in the players and GM’s head, leaving them more memorable. To plan a good encounter, one must have it be very open in the way its approached, with more then one way of solving the encounter, or having something be clear, encounters need to remain open to allow players to have their creative juices flowing.
Encounters do not need to be difficult to be good, nor do they need to be too easy, Encounters should always be around the recommended level of the players for their difficulty, Encounters should be spread around and not too common, but also not too infrequent that there’s nothing to do. One must balance a fine line with encounters to allow all players to express their characters in a way that will give each character the spotlight, a good number of encounters a day depends on the GM and whether the players are having fun.
While planning good encounters are important, downtime is also equally as important, as players should be exposed to roleplay and other means
Random Encounters
Random encounters are events that occur over the course of a journey, an incident or something similar, they are entirely random and are usually smaller things, or can lead to different plot hooks or points you’d like to explore in the setting should you use them. Random encounters can be rolled at any time, should you choose to.
Typically, when journeys occur, you’ll want to roll an amount of encounters, One at the start of the journey, one at the end of the journey, and any additional encounters based on every hour that it takes inbetween to continue the journey. When players are resting for 8 hours, you simply only need to roll one encounter.
To calculate whether an encounter is positive, neutral or negative, roll a Luck dice, add all of the travellers modifiers together, then divide by the amount of travellers, on a critical success, the encounter is positive, on a critical failure, the encounter is negative, otherwise, the encounter is neutral.
Typically, it is better to create your own encounter list that matches your story and world more accurately, however, a lot of the time that may not be possible. You are free to use the encounter lists below as an example for how they should look and what kinds of encounters should be faced.
